Mobile HMI in a tablet form factor for the smart control of cobots

What are the advantages of a wireless HMI?

Operating cobots requires user interfaces that provide optimal support for users during programming, commissioning, and operation. A mobile, wireless HMI addresses this need and offers a significant advantage in terms of flexibility, ergonomics, and workplace safety compared to stationary or wired control devices. Greater freedom of movement, intuitive operation, and shorter setup times help optimize workflows and sustainably increase productivity in modern production environments.

With the M2Smart® HMI, the operator can position themselves freely around the cobot at any time without being restricted by the control panel or a cable. This gives them a clear view of the process at all times, allowing them to react more quickly and control the cobot with greater precision. As a result, errors are reduced, cobot setup and teaching are simplified, and critical areas can be continuously monitored.

With no cable in the way, the user can move freely around the cobot they are operating. This not only allows them to find the optimal position for controlling the cobot at any time, but also enables them to operate the control unit—and thus the cobot—from an ergonomically comfortable position.

The M2Smart® HMI10 control units were specifically developed for comfortable and ergonomic use. Thanks to their well-thought-out design, the weight of the device rests on the user’s forearm during operation, noticeably reducing strain on the hand and wrist. The result is fatigue-free, comfortable, and ergonomic operation—even during extended setup, teach, or service tasks.

When programming and commissioning a cobot, it is necessary to constantly switch between monitoring the process and adjusting parameters. A wireless HMI allows the user to perform both tasks directly at the work site. Parameter changes can be made immediately, and their effects can be verified in real time. This results in shorter setup and configuration times, as well as more efficient commissioning and higher productivity.
With the mobile, wireless M2Smart® HMI, multiple cobots can be controlled conveniently and efficiently one after another using a single control device. Pairing with the respective cobot is quick and easy via an NFC tag.

However, the M2Smart® HMI was not developed just for controlling cobots: The system from ACD Elektronik is equally suitable for controlling machines, production lines, and automated guided vehicles (AGVs). This creates a unified operating platform that allows a company’s entire machine fleet to be centrally controlled, monitored, and maintained. This reduces hardware costs, simplifies workflows, and simultaneously increases flexibility in day-to-day production.

With a mobile, wireless HMI such as the M2Smart® HMI from ACD Elektronik, employees can control a large portion of the machinery using just a single control device. This eliminates the need to train employees on how to use different control devices and operating concepts. The workload is significantly reduced, and it is even possible to use the M2Smart® HMI10 as a personal device. This way, each employee has their own device and can customize it according to their preferences.
Wireless operation allows the user to move freely within the cobot’s workspace. This enables the user to always position themselves optimally for operating and monitoring the system while maintaining a safe distance from the robot. This ensures greater safety and a significantly more comfortable working environment.

By eliminating the need for a connecting cable, potential tripping hazards in the work area are also eliminated. This reduces the risk of accidents for operators and service personnel and contributes to a safe, tidy work environment.
